If you don’t know who Chris Webby is, well than it’s time to get familiar with the 23 year-old , Norwalk, Connecticut native who has been selling out shows across the country for the past couple of years. Webby, who helped usher in a new school Hip-Hop movement and mentality several years ago, has been steadily building upon the grassroots foundation he created while simultaneously honing his skills. Having worked with artists like: Freeway, Mac Miller, Joell Ortiz, Big K.R.I.T., and more, Webby has shown and proven his worth time and time again. AllHipHop.com got a chance to speak to Webby as he prepares for the release of his first commercial project, There Goes the Neighborhood, which will drop later this month. Webby spoke on his come-up, his thoughts on other white rappers, his work ethic, and most importantly, what’s next for the “Suburban Commando.” Introducing, the newest addition to the Breeding Ground, Chris Webby… AllHipHop.com: Tell me a little bit about yourself. Who is Chris Webby? Chris Webby: I started rapping in 6th grade, so I’ve been rapping now for 12, going on 13 years, so more than half my life which, I think, speaks volumes about at least my lyrical capacity because there’s a lot of dudes who just see rappers blowing up nowadays and they think they can do it by putting a couple of songs on YouTube, and on occasion some of them do do it. You know, the Internet is a great thing. It’s made artists like me possible but it’s also made a ton of sh*tty artists possible too. I have been doing it for a very long time though. I grew up ciphering, and freestyling has always been a huge part of my forte. I grew up doing that and battling back in the day and the music has come over time and it’s just been a crazy experience. All of the grassroots growth, from the bottom to where it’s at now, which definitely isn’t the top but we’re getting there. AllHipHop.com: Would you say that going back a few years, that you always wanted to rap and you used the outlets of parties and school functions at college to show your skills, or were you just messing around and realized that you could make a career out of rapping? Chris Webby: Definitely the first option. I’ve always wanted to do this and I used all those parties as like my first audiences, you know, freestyling at keg parties. I mean drunk people are easy to entertain, everybody knows that, so you throw out a couple punch lines and get all the sorority girls going crazy, get with them later that night. Battling used to also be a huge part of what I did, but I barely do it anymore. There’s nothing more gratifying then just lyrically slaughtering someone in front of a crowd, like some modern day gladiator’s. AllHipHop.com: So did you end up graduating college? Chris Webby: Not even close. I got kicked out of Hofstra [University] sophomore year when my buddies robbed a drug dealer and I drove the car like a dumb*ss of course and then got ratted out and went through a real nice legal situation which sucked *ss. In retrospect though, the reason that I am where I am is because if I was trying to balance classes and this, it just wouldn’t work. AllHipHop.com: Sounds like a major blessing in disguise. Chris Webby: It absolutely was. AllHipHop.com: So since you just mentioned the robbery, I have to ask if you have heard anything or have any thoughts on the supposed shot that Mac Miller took on his Blue Slide Park song “One Last Night” where he raps “A million people in the world, I don’t hate one, even them dummies robbin people with some fake guns, make mistakes young boy”? Chris Webby: Yeah, I heard about that and checked it out cause I have to stay on top of what people are saying. I don’t think he would take a shot at me, I really don’t, the last time I checked me and Mac were cool, it’s not like we talk everyday but you know. I don’t see any reason why he would. We’re not like buddy-buddy on the phone all the time but it’s not cause we’re not cool, we’re just busy doing our own sh*t. I see him around every once in awhile; it’s good, you know, it’s love. AllHipHop.com: Well it’s just interesting because it’s coming on the heels of the whole Machine Gun Kelly and Yelawolf “beef” that the Internet ran away with recently. We don’t need all these dope white rappers going at each other, what’s the deal? Chris Webby: Exactly, exactly. As far as I know, Me and Mac are cool. I met Yelawolf in Atlanta the other day, I saw Machine Gun Kelly at a XXL showcase last week, I try to keep it pretty cool with everybody. I’m not a fan of Sam Adams, but those that are my fans know about that. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDrfV6oyDiM&w=560&h=315] AllHipHop.com: Well since we’re on the topic of white rappers, what are your thoughts on these artists individually starting with Yelawolf? Chris Webby: He is very dope. I really, really like his music. That new Kid Rock song he just released, “Let’s Roll,” is sick. He’s got Shady Records behind him, that guy is about to make things happen, he’s not going anywhere. AllHipHop.com: What about Eminem? Chris Webby: Eminem is my favorite rapper of all time. In my opinion, he’s the greatest rapper of all time; I know everybody has their opinions but I mean, to not have him in your Top 5 is ludicrous if you ask me. AllHipHop.com: And Machine Gun Kelly? Chris Webby: MGK is cool too. I know a little bit less about him, cause he kind of popped up recently. He’s got the Diddy backing which is interesting, and it’ll be interesting to see how that whole situations pans […]

WALE TALKS SEX SYMBOL STATUS AND “AMBITION” WITH ALLHIPHOP.COM!
There was a time in D.C., just a few short years back, when the most prominent MC on the Chocolate City’s rap scene WASN’T named Wale. To be exact, his name is Tabi Bonney, and his ultra-lyrical, Go-Go-inspired tracks helped lay a path for other, errrr, ummm, “locals” to follow. Tabi isn’t bitter about the other successes coming out of his ‘hood right now, though. The former educator, who now records under a famous Roc-A-Fella founder, is all about the music and the touring right now. And along with fellow artists like Murs and a long-missing Nicole Wray, he’s making thoughtful, musically-laced raps while building a strong fan base across the country. If you don’t know Tabi yet, get acquainted via AllHipHop.com’s exclusive interview with one of “The District’s” quiet but golden spitters: AllHipHop.com: I know you’re from D.C. by way of West Africa where your family has roots, so I wanted to ask you first about D.C. It’s such a melting pot for so many cultures, and I think there is a really great musical tradition there. So, do you have any musical influences that came independent of your African roots, like from D.C.? Tabi Bonney: Yeah, I mean, absolutely. I think that’s what Go-Go music is like, really hook happy and strong on percussion, so I think that’s why I lean more towards a lot of bridges. I think I’m a good hook writer, too. AllHipHop.com: Well, people might be surprised to hear about your educational background, which is really impressive. You have a master’s degree. I was just thinking, I’ve met a few, good, intelligent rappers this year who have actually completed college. J. Cole comes to mind, and Dee-1 out of New Orleans. So I wanted to ask you, do you think those degrees lend something extra to your lyrics and to your style? Tabi Bonney: For me, I think, not per se to my lyrics, but more so towards the discipline and patience, you know, being in the industry and going after your dreams. AllHipHop.com: Right. Tabi Bonney: That’s what I think has given me the persistence and discipline to just buckle down and be in this line of work. As far as lyrics, I wouldn’t say so because all the stuff I studied was really scientific. AllHipHop.com: That’s right, you have a Master’s in Biology. So you’re going to be walking around for the rest of your life with all of this Biology in your head! Do you think you’ll ever do something with that? Tabi Bonney: I don’t personally think so. I think if I had to do it again, I would go more into other sciences as far as dealing with, say, the solar system or even just new technology of science that’s not biology and stuff. AllHipHop.com: OK, that’s interesting! Well, Dee-1, who I mentioned earlier, is also a former teacher like you, and he said his students, before he left the classroom, his students knew he rapped. So did your students realize that you were a rapper back then, and did you see any opportunities to use Hip-Hop in your classroom? Tabi Bonney: Yeah, they actually found out that I rapped and actually did a write-up on me in the school paper. They just came at me to battle me! [laughter] I don’t know. It was just weird because my age from them wasn’t that different. I was maybe three years older than most of my students, because I taught as soon as I graduated college. And then, I was in an inner city school so I had some 19- and 20-year-olds in the classroom. AllHipHop.com: Wow, that must have been interesting. Tabi Bonney: It was! AllHipHop.com: I was looking back and thinking about you, and there are some people out there who might say, out of the D.C. region, you were the bigger rapper at one point, and I’m sure there’s always comparisons to Wale. Do you kind of feel like you built the foundation, and then he just sort of catapulted off it? What are your feelings about that? Tabi Bonney: I feel like I definitely laid the groundwork because there is still nothing to this day, there hasn’t been another rapper outside of D.C., that has gotten as much radio play as I did, not even being signed. So the thing is, I am extremely excited and happy for Wale, because I think it opens up the door for everybody. And the thing with me is like, I just feel like everybody has their own journey, like I’m completely happy with my own journey and not taking the major label route as of yet because I got those offers during that time. But I just knew it wasn’t right for me, because they thought my song was a dance song. AllHipHop.com: Right. Tabi Bonney: So, I could have very well done that and my career could have been over, you know what I mean? AllHipHop.com: Yeah, absolutely. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fK6lkzlf9dI&w=420&h=315] Tabi Bonney: So I still feel like I’m just getting started honestly. Just being around Dame Dash and soaking up so much knowledge from him and also looking at the journey and the long haul, because I just really plan on being a multi-millionaire on the road. I’m not one of these guys that’s just in it for the fame and then that’s it. You catch me a year or two later, and I’m broke. AllHipHop.com: Right, so you love the performance angle. Well, that’s great to hear. Your album, The Summer Years, I know you had Ski Beatz as an executive producer and you just mentioned Dame Dash. So I want to hear about how you hooked up with Dame, and then I want you to tell me…I think your sound is somewhat different now from before and does that have anything to do with the people you’re working with now? Tabi Bonney: Yeah, I think so. I feel that this is one of my best albums […]
Jeezy and T.I. Collaboration Album In the Works? After performing together at the BET Hip-Hop Awards, and Tip being featured on Jeezy’s new single “F.A.M.E.,” word has begun to spread that the two Atlanta-bred artists will be linking up for a collaboration album similar to Watch the Throne. In an interview with Billboard, Jeezy said: “Me and Tip actually were together and we [talked] about it. We’ve just hit the ground running and been doing so many records that I don’t think it’s impossible. And we’ve known each other [long] enough to put something like that together, and I definitely think that the city would need it, because it would be a good look. And it would be an amazing album release party, by the way.” Jeezy also has a NEW release date for T.M. 103, which is slated to drop on December 20. Amen. Eminem Working on “8 Mile” Sequel? Not Exactly… Eminem and Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter have been shopping around the project Southpaw for quite a while now. After being dropped by Dreamworks during the summer, both Sony and MGM studios have shown interest in picking it up and starting production. Sutter recently described to Deadline how the film is a continuation of Eminem’s story and life seen in 8 Mile; however, this film would show Shady’s next chapter told through the perspective of boxing. Check it: “In a way, this is a continuation of the 8 Mile story, but rather than a literal biography, we are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life. He’ll play a world champion boxer who really hits a hard bottom, and has to fight to win back his life for his young daughter. At its core, this is a retelling of his struggles over the last five years of his life, using the boxing analogy. I love that the title refers to [Eminem] being a lefty, which is to boxing what a white rapper is to hip hop; dangerous, unwanted and completely unorthodox. It’s a much harder road for a southpaw than a right-handed boxer.” Maybe this time Em can get that Oscar nomination he was snubbed for back in 2003. Grand Theft Auto V!!!!!!! Some huge video game news was made today when the good folks at Rockstar Games updated their website to feature the image you see above. On November 2, they will be releasing the game’s first trailer. Expect the game to actually get released sometime next fall. Could the “V” have something to do with Vice City? Sound off! Quickies: -Sir Michael Rocks of The Cool Kids has officially joined Curren$y’s Warner Bros. imprint Jet Life Recordings as a solo artist. -Kim Kardashian will be co-starring in Tyler Perry’s next film, The Marriage Counselor. Any fans? -If you haven’t heard by now, MC Hammer has created his own “relationship” search engine called WireDoo. Not a joke.

Rating: 5.5/10 DJ Drama is too legit to quit. In a day in age where the DJs struggle to stay relevant and the art-form has been diluted, Drama refuses to stop making records. His first two albums were named after the Gangsta Grillz series that has made his name, but his third installment is appropriately titled, Third Power. In his own words, the project is his “biggest and best yet.” Well, with 12 tracks, the first part of that statement is already untrue… As a fan, you go into an album expecting a certain sound from artists – which can be a good and bad thing. When the first track “Oh My” begins to play, there is no surprise for the listener. And that’s a bad thing. Typical production matched with uninspired lyrics is a running theme, and unfortunately, it’s evident from the first song. “Aint No Way Around it” (aptly titled) and “Me and My Money” featuring Future and Gucci Mane, respectively, are both monotonous and sonically below average. The same goes to “Self Made” with Red Café and Yo Gotti. There are so many moments on the LP that drastically kill any momentum it begins to gain. It sounds like DJ Drama spent an entire album searching for a ‘street anthem,’ instead of letting such just simply happen. For those who look hard enough, there are a few hidden gems on the record: Freddie Gibbs on “Rough”, Pusha T on “Everything That Glitters”, J. Cole on “Undercover” and all three artists (Young Chris, Meek Mill, Freeway) on “Lay Low” perform well. But this is about it. You glaze over everything else. All the songs follow the same braggadocio motif that beings to get tiresome after track 3. And, every song has the same production setup, with those quick-strike snares and synthesizer heavy instrumentals. It’s boring. While the production is the main issue, so are most of the artists in the seemingly stellar lineup on Third Power. Simply put, few really brought it. There are no standout verses, standout beats, or standouts songs, and that makes for a very uneventful album. It’s hard to tell what happened; it sounds as if DJ Drama threw 12 okay mixtape tracks together and called it an album. And maybe this is the problem. There is no cohesion here; there is no groove, no emotion, no hunger, no message. You get it. It’s not a great album. Is this what we expected out of DJ Drama? Perhaps…however, even his Da Art of Storytelling Pt. 4 held its own on at least a few tracks. Apparently, the third time (or power) isn’t the charm.
Drake Leaving Young Money After Take Care?!! Some inside sources/snitches in Drake’s camp are reporting that his time with Young Money is going to be ending soon. This is not the first time these rumors and reports have been made public, but now there seems to be some evidence to back it up. Last week, Drake announced his Club Paradise tour with Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky; in other words, no Young Money brethren. On top of that, word is that Take Care is contractually Drake’s last album with Wayne’s Young Money imprint. November 15 is the new date…only time will tell. Maybach Music Group’s Newest Member is……..Emilio Rojas? Government Closing Tons of California Marijuana Dispensaries! Federal prosecutors said at a news conference that the crackdown is directed at the “commercial marijuana industry,” particularly operations near schools, parks and athletic fields. “We want to put to rest the notion that large marijuana businesses can shelter themselves under state law,” said U.S. Attorney Melinda Haag, the top federal prosecutor in San Francisco. Haag said the 1996 voter-approved law “has been hijacked by profiteers … using the cover to make enormous amounts of money.” In a separate statement, the U.S. attorney for the central district of California, André Birotte Jr., said: “It is important to note that for-profit, commercial marijuana operations are illegal not only under federal law, but also under California law. While California law permits collective cultivation of marijuana in limited circumstances, it does not allow commercial distribution through the store-front model we see across California.” Thoughts? What do you guys out in California think about this? Will the West Coast “medicinal weed” crowd survive? Avengers Assemble!!! Atlantic City is home to casinos, gambling, entertainment, fine dining, and the #1 House of Blues location in the United States in terms of ticket sales and the number of shows scheduled. In a place like Atlantic City, which rests in between New York City and Philadelphia, sights, sounds, and exquisite tastes are never in short supply. People should constantly be looking at Atlantic City, because as history at the House of Blues has shown, you never know when you could catch the next J. Cole, Lauryn Hill, or Wiz Khalifa performing. Ultimately, if more people were aware of the kind of talent that travels to Atlantic City, it would surely be on everyone’s radar as a “music destination.” AllHipHop.com got the chance to talk to Jason Spencer, Regional Director of Entertainment for the House of Blues, as well as a number of other lounges, clubs, and venues throughout Atlantic City. We spoke on his background, his introduction to the music industry, the process behind booking talent, and much more: AllHipHop.com: So, how exactly did you secure this position as Regional Director of Entertainment for Atlantic City? Jason Spencer: Well, I essentially went the old fashioned route, the school route. I went undergrad down at Morehouse College, majored in Marketing, went back to graduate school at NYU, and while I was there, I linked up with Reebok. I got to work on the S. Carter brand, so that was my first tie with the whole entertainment, music, marketing component, and while I was finishing up there I got recruited to go out to Vegas and work for Caesar’s Entertainment in their marketing department. Eventually because of my experiences and background and expertise, I was offered a job to come out to Atlantic City and become the Director of Marketing for the House of Blues here at Showboat, which is independent of the network. So, I was in charge of overseeing the concert venue, the Foundation Room, from a marketing perspective, and that eventually led to me being promoted to overseeing the region from an entertainment perspective, which is about four to five concert venues, multiple lounges, and a couple of night clubs. AllHipHop.com: What is the difference, in your own experience, between Las Vegas and Atlantic City? Jason Spencer: Well, it is essentially two different jobs. In Las Vegas, it was more on casino marketing and building out that brand. When I came over here to Atlantic City, it definitely transitioned to what I always wanted to do, which was leveraging entertainment as a vehicle to market something. Out here, it switched to marketing concerts and celebrity appearances; so really, two different jobs, outside the weather being different. AllHipHop.com: What goes into the process of deciding who you’re going to book, and who will perform here? Is it more of you and a team going out and securing talent, or is talent normally presented to you first? Jason Spencer: It’s a combinaton of both. I can tell you on the Hip-Hop side of things, it’s leaned a little more towards my team targeting artists. We do over a couple hundred shows, from Rock to Pop to R&B, and where a lot of those shows are part of a standard tour – which Hip-Hop also has – but we’ve set out and targeted artists. We have a formula for what we are looking for that tells us who we think is going to do well in the venue. So, it’s definitely a mix of both, but on the Hip-Hop side, I would say it’s 70 percent of us targeting and 30 percent artists coming through. AllHipHop.com: What are some of the factors in your formula that helps you decide what Hip-Hop artists to book down here? Jason Spencer: We look at a multitude of factors. Artists’ touring information, radio spins, what they have out right now, as well as multiple, different social components and the “heat” factor. That’s where that intelligence and being of the culture is the piece of it – where you know that this artist is hot. It’s that intuitiveness that the team comes together and says “this is the next one,” and we have to have all of our data that kind if supports it. But at the end of the day, you have to make that call, and use your instincts to a degree. AllHipHop.com: Is there an artist out there who has not performed at the House of Blues yet, but that you would love to book, both for yourself and for the people who visit and live in Atlantic City? Jason Spencer: It’s really just about someone making sense for a 2,500 seat venue, and we’ve always had success with that. Now, I would love to have some of the bigger artists come and play my venue, but it would not make sense financially or business-wise to have those in the venue. But I am really proud of what the team has put together and the roster of folks we’ve had come through here, from big to smaller acts. One thing that we have toyed with as well is putting together our own packages, so we created the “Legends of Hip-Hop” series where some of my favorite artists like Big Daddy Kane perform with Biz Markie and Naughty By Nature. So we’ve been trying to put together unique packages to fulfill everyone’s wants and needs, because ultimately it’s all about diversity here. AllHipHop.com: Can you tell me a little about your history with music? Jason Spencer: Yeah, I mean I grew up in a time where I consider myself part of Hip-Hop and its culture. I’m from New York, so just growing up there and then going down to Atlanta, which was great, at Morehouse where I learned. Primarily, I was East Coast before growing up, but being in Atlanta and that school, we had kids from all over the country, so that’s when you start hearing more about the music from California and Texas, and even some of the more Southern music and that whole […]
