(AllHipHop News) Earlier today Al Sharpton, the President of National Action Network, and the family of Emmett Till met with PepsiCo officials. Sharpton and the Till family wanted to address the parent company of Mountain Dew about the corporation’s connection to the Hip-Hop and civil rights communities. [ALSO READ: PepsiCo To Meet With Emmett Tills Family & Al Sharpton] After the meeting Rev. Sharpton issued a statement: The meeting today with PepsiCo representatives, the family of Emmett Till, and me at corporate headquarters was a positive meeting. PepsiCo apologized to the family again and they accepted while agreeing with me that this is a “teachable moment” and we must work with younger Hip-Hop artists so they know their civil rights history and become more engaged in the community. National Action Network (NAN) doesn’t want the end result to be the penalization of artists-although they clearly need to be corrected–but rather them becoming more engaged and conscientious of civil rights history. We agreed to work as partners to try and sit down with younger hip-hop artists, corporate executives, and people in the civil rights community. Last week, Mountain Dew cut professional ties with rapper Lil Wayne after the Young Money leader faced criticism for his controversial lyrics that referenced Emmett Till in the song “Karate Chop (Remix).” The Till family had asked for an apology from Wayne. Wayne gave a statement acknowledging the family’s pain, but they rejected Wayne’s letter as a “non-apology.” It appears after today’s sit down, PepsiCo, the Till family, and the National Action Network are ready to move forward from this controversy and join together with Hip-Hop artists to further the discussion of the importance of Emmett Till’s legacy and the history of the civil rights movement.
(AllHipHop News) The family of Emmett Till will get the chance to address their concerns with officials of PepsiCo face-to-face today (May 8) . Civil rights activist and television host Rev. Al Sharpton will also be present at the meeting after asking the soda company to speak with him and the family about the recent controversy involving Lil Wayne. Sharpton released a press statement on the issue through his National Action Network last week: I have been in conversations over the last several days with leadership at PepsiCo and the family of Emmett Till we intend to meet next week. This has been a “teaching moment for Lil Wayne, corporate America and the family of Emmett Till yet more than a condemnation of any one artist, it is an affirmation of Emmett Till and a call for more sensitivity about what we say and do in our culture. National Action Network does not want it to end with artists losing contracts but rather with a sensitizing of corporate America so we can learn from these experiences and set a tone that will help everybody. It’s in that spirit that we go forward to meeting with PepsiCo next week. Wayne began receiving public criticism earlier this year for a line in the song “Karate Chop (Remix)” that made a comparison between the violent death of the civil rights icon and a sex act. Wayne eventually made a statement directed to Till’s family, saying that he would “like to take a moment to acknowledge your hurt.” The family rejected the letter expressing that they felt the statement was not a real apology and vowed to continue to lobby companies with ties to Wayne. The YMCMB rapper had been a part of Mountain Dew’s (a subsidiary of PepsiCo) “Dew You” campaign. [ALSO READ: Pepsi Co. The commercial was deemed as racially insensitive and misogynistic by some. Tyler, The Creator Responds to Mountain Dew Racism Controversy, Dr. Boyce Watkins Responds Back
(AllHipHop News) Yesterday (May 1), Mountain Dew and Tyler The Creator pulled a recent ad featuring the Odd Future rapper from the internet. The commercial was criticized, most notably by Dr. Boyce Watkins, as being racist and misogynistic. The clip centered around Tyler’s character, “Felicia The Goat,” appearing in a police line-up with his fellow OFWGKTA members. The young black men were being reviewed by a severely injured white women as a police detective pushes her to identify her attacker. [ALSO READ: Tyler The Creator and Mountain Dew Facing Criticism For New Ad Being Called Racist] PepsiCo, Mountain Dew’s parent company, issued an apology stating that they could see how the commercial could be seen as offensive. Mountain Dew asked Tyler to take the ad off the Odd Future YouTube channel, and the company removed it from their own website. Hey guys – made a big mistake we’ve removed the offensive video from all our channels. #fail — Mountain Dew® (@mtn_dew) May 1, 2013 Like the previous two Felicia Mountain Dew commercials, the “line-up” ad was developed and directed by Tyler. His co-manager, Christian Clancy, decided to address the issue and defend his client on his Tumblr page. His post stated in part: Context may or not help those who are offended and I wholly respect that but for those who are interested I can offer the following and leave the rest to Tyler. 1. This spot was part of an overall admittedly absurd storyline about a crazy goat who becomes obsessed with Mountain Dew 2. The lady in front of the lineup is the waitress from the first spot. 3. The lineup consists of Tylers friends and odd future members who were available that day. (LBoy, Leftbrain, Garret from Trash Talk and Errol) 4. He absolutely never intended to spark a controversy about race. it was simply an again admittedly absurd story that was never meant to be taken seriously. Again we apologize if this was taken out of context and would never trivialize racism, especially now in America where voting and civil rights are being challenged at the highest level. I can however stand firmly by someone I have believed in since we met only because I know him and i know all of this was never his intent. Tyler has also mentioned the commercial and the controversy on Twitter. Sending out the following tweets: IDIOTS THE LADY IN THE NEW MOUNTAIN DEW COMMERCIAL IS THE WAITRESS THAT GOT ATTACK RETARD — Tyler, The Creator (@fucktyler) April 25, 2013 I Would Love To Have A Convo With @drboycewatkins1 — Tyler, The Creator (@fucktyler) May 1, 2013
(AllHipHop News) Tyler, The Creator’s latest commercial for Mountain Dew has some people up in arms. The 58-second ad features Tyler as “Felicia The Goat” appearing in a police line-up next to only black men. An injured white women on crutches is shown as the victim. She is told by a police detective drinking a Mountain Dew to, “nail this little sucker.” Before the women picks out her attacker, the viewer hears Felicia say, “Yeah it’s me. You should have given me some more. I’m nasty.” The “Line-Up” commercial is an extension of a previous ad where Felicia attacks the same women in a restaurant. In that spot the women, as a waitress, calls Felicia “a nasty goat” before getting beat by the animal for not having more Mountain Dew. The “restaurant” commercial ends with Tyler saying, “You never gonna catch me.” The phrase is also at that the close of the “line-up” ad after the injured women refuses to identify Felicia because she is constantly intimidated by the goat from behind a one-way glass. At one point Felicia says, “snitches get stitches, fool.” The latest commercial has been criticized as racially insensitive and misogynistic. Social commentator Dr. Boyce Watkins called the ad “arguably the most racist commercial in history.” Dr. Watkins posted an article on yourblackworld.net decrying the commercial. Writing in part: Of course, in the world of Mountain Dew, every single suspect is black. Not just regular black people, but the kinds of ratchety negroes you might find in the middle of any hip-hop minstrel show: Gold teeth, “mean mugging,” sun glasses wearing, white-t sportin, hard core n*ggaz ready to “get into some ol gangsta sh*t.” Apparently, this is the kind of ad you put out if you want to appeal to the black male demographic. Watkins goes on to chastise Mountain Dew for partnering with a rapper who he says “celebrates the sexual assaults of pregnant women” referring to Tyler’s song “Tron Cat” from the 2011 LP Goblin. This situation is the most recent controversy over the last several months that have highlighted public scrutiny over what some see as offensive and degrading lyrics and images in Hip-Hop. Mountain Dew is also facing calls from the family of Emmitt Till to drop rapper Lil Wayne as an endorsement partner because Wayne has yet to apologize for a line about the murdered teenager in Future’s “Karate Chop (Remix).” [ALSO READ: EXCLUSIVE: Emmett Till’s Family Plans To Relentlessly Pursue Lil Wayne’s Sponsors] Last month Maybach Music Group leader Rick Ross was dropped by Reebok after protests over a line the Miami rapper delivered on “U.O.E.N.O.” that was seen as promoting date rape. [ALSO READ: Reebok Dumps Rick Ross] These incidents have sparked a debate within the Hip-Hop community about an artist’s right to free speech as it relates to a corporation’s choice to yield to pressure from outside groups upset with a rapper’s content. The ongoing discussion about rappers depictions of reality versus fiction expressed in their art is sure continue to rev up as well. Representatives from Mountain Dew nor Odd Future have commented publicly on the new ad with Tyler, The Creator, but the “line-up” video has been pulled from Odd Future’s YouTube channel.
