To the credit of it’s creators and press team, “Zoolander 2” has had an incredible social media campaign leading up to the release of the actual movie itself this February 12, 2016 in advance of Valentine’s Day weekend. Indeed the intricacy and spot on nature of the campaign is a wholly self sufficient and brilliantly satisfying theatre unto itself. They have the flawless skincare promo for The House Of Atoz, a hilarious send up by Kristen Wiig of a next to unintelligible more Russian styled Donatella Versace. There is also a spectacular fashion moment featuring a not quite centaur styled Zoolander opposite the ever-gorgeous Naomi Campbell. As for interactive IRL moments, in Los Angeles “Zoolander 2” had a #ZoolanderGasStation Memorial For Models Who Were Killed By A Freak Gasoline Fight Accident, which was something tenable that old and new “Zoolander” fans could get a good laugh from as well as a nice free of charge photo op. However, despite all of this social media eye candy and care to detail, when it comes to the actual movie, “Zoolander 2” falls short as a cohesively funny whole. Despite everything being teed up to make this film epic when it comes to hilarity, oddly nothing every really falls into it’s place and stays put as something you can really laugh about until you just can laugh anymore. “Zoolander 2” starts off well with an excellent cameo by none other than Justin Bieber, but when it comes to connecting all of the unexpected cameo bits to the SNL sized scene gags, the whole movie just doesn’t coalesce. Time and time again, we are waiting for the other shoe to drop on a scene that we know is supposed to be funny, but in actuality is more of a forced laugh based on what we found funny about the original “Zoolander” versus a genuine reaction to what is being presented now. A large part of this inability to deliver could be the setup of our two heroes, Derek Zoolander, played by Ben Stiller and Hansel, played by Owen Wilson. Other than reiterating that Zoolander is still dumber than a box of rocks, and Hansel still has a humorously open relationship with romantic commitment, not much else is left to discover in depth about them. As such, they remain largely static and one dimensional in a vehicle that only works if they have the ability to be all in as complex, albeit funny players. As for the best part of the film, Will Ferrell’s Mugatu leaves Stiller and Wilson in the dust when it comes to consistently bringing on the funny. Unlike Stiller and Wilson’s characters, we get to see a very complex and hilariously elastic exploration of exactly how evil Mugatu and the exclusivity of fashion can be. Ferrell’s balls to the wall performance as the unabashedly soulless but deviously fashion conscious Mugatu is not just enduringly comedic, but inspired. The quick dressing down that Mugatu gives Anna Wintour makes the grade as a sharp and witty takedown of high fashion as a glittery but largely empty show of white privilege and class attitude at it’s worst – and that’s no mean feat in a mainstream comedy. If the movie itself doesn’t deliver as a complete package, the bits that Mugatu gives are enough to give the idea of going to see this movie in the theatre some life. Other special cameos, such as Kiefer Sutherland as a Jack Bauer you wouldn’t expect and Ariana Grande getting labeled a “basic b####” are moments to die for. Overall grade, a C minus with special circumstances.
“Daddy’s Home” isn’t anything revolutionary when it comes to comedy, but this is more than okay with regards to what it is trying to achieve. It’s core strength is that it is happy to stay in its lane when it comes to what we can expect from both Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as funny men doing age appropriate work after SNL and The Funky Bunch. Ferrell is the terminally uncool parent suddenly thrown into direct competition against the too cool for school Wahlberg as both vie for the label of “best dad”. Of course, in the complicated landscape that is today’s modern and heavily appendixed nuclear family, keeping a permanent lock on such a vaunted status or any other is nearly impossible. So, in trying to attain the unattainable, comedy ensues as we watch Ferrell and Wahlberg attempt do what we as parents attempt to do every day, only to rise again with the Sisyphean hope of better results tomorrow. In short, “Daddy’s Home” is a great movie for people surviving that hell that hath no fury like that of the child who feels inadequately loved. While this movie is certainly a success when it comes to exploiting classic but modern familial territory, it really isn’t for kids. Much of the humor, while unquestionably satisfying is definitely nothing that you will relish explaining to your under twelve set, or even your more naïve under eighteens on the way home from the theater. So, unless it’s within your wheelhouse to explain to kids why strippers and women with daddy issues can be laugh out loud funny in the abstract but nothing fun to experience in real life, leave them at home with the sitter. The scatological and more adult skewing mental humor is pretty good in “Daddy’s Home”. True, many of the more subtle situational elements could have been pushed a bit further to achieve a sharper bite, but that’s about narrower more specific tastes versus broad comedy, and this movie is definitely broad humor versus finely crafted or slyly observational laughs. To that end, the moments that are the laugh out loud best are those firmly rooted in some serious balls to the wall physical humor. In terms of where these gag bonanza scenes go, they deliver some great laughs. However, the impact of these payoffs are directly related to the element of surprise so try not to watch too many trailers as some reveal a bit too much of what makes these moments truly special. If there is any danger with “Daddy’s Home”, it’s if moviegoers take it too seriously. If you look at the movie too closely from a logistical standpoint, it can start to crumble a bit – especially with regard to Wahlberg’s inexplicable vehicular mobility despite being established as an out of towner who isn’t the first son of oil sheiks or a rogue music mogul. However, if you take the movie for the light fare that it is – with a welcome dash of heart when it comes to the merits of a little bit of a dance battle going a long way in solving parent/student peace, it’s a pretty solid comedy. With good ensemble acting throughout with unexpected cameos by way of Hannibal Buress and some other stand up all stars taking a welcome bow in the parent ‘hood depicted, “Daddy’s Home” is a yes when it comes to uncomplicated but grownup holiday fare.

What’s an election year without an election-themed movie? With the 2012 election coming up in November, it’s only obvious that Hollywood is going to attempt to make a buck off of it. However, if it has to be done, why not design a comedy and pair two actors that have made an artform out of playing hilarious movie morons? That’s exactly what Warner Bros. did with their new comedy, The Campaign, starring Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis which opened in theaters nationwide on August 9. The story takes us to a small district in North Carolina, where a longtime Congressman named Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) is looking to breeze to another term unopposed, while he campaigns on slogans that are heavy on Jesus and patriotism. A major moral screw up by Congressman Brady opens the door for two billionaire siblings – the Motch Brothers (an obvious spoof on the real life conservative Koch brothers) – to search for a puppet politician to unseat Brady. The Motch brothers are convinced that anybody they throw their money behind can win the election, so they choose an odd-ball named Marty Huggins (Galifianakis) to face off against the vulnerable incumbent Brady. [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7yC0iiK7a4&w=560&h=315] Even with Brady’s hysterical screw-ups, Huggins has a difficult time keeping up in the polls because of his own weird ways and so enters Dylan McDermott’s character as his ruthless campaign manager, who nearly steals the show from Ferrell and Galifianakis. The Campaign is non-stop hilarity with joke after joke coming one right after another. There are a few moments where the pranks go a little too far and seem forced – but like a good prize fighter throwing a lot of power punches, many connect. Aside from the digs at big business, the Koch brothers, and religion, the movie kind of stays away from the Democrat vs. Republican theme, and makes it more about two idiot Southern politicians doing anything ridiculous to get elected. For their first pairing, Ferrell and Galifianakis deliver the laughs as intended.
